Boeing 747 LCF (Large Cargo Freighter) a.k.a. Dreamlifter is a converted passenger 747-400. There are 4 of these configured planes and they fly between the two coasts of the US, Italy and Japan manufacturing hubs for the 787 fuselages and wings. Its primary cargo are focused on the production the 787 dream liners. Some unique features are obviously the enlarged top fuselage and the pivoting rear section that serves as the primary cargo hatch. The winglets that normally come with a -400 where removed as it created undesirable effects during flight testing and the rudder or vertical stabilizer had been enlarged by 10 ft. From the bulkhead forward is pressurized for the crew but behind the bulkhead, the cargo area is not pressurized. It is not FAA approved for caring passengers of any kind. Only essential crew and being a -400 series it only requires two to fly it. Being close to KPAE, I have the luxury of visiting within 30 min to to catch this unique beauty in action when I can.
